Using custom software[1] the map combines various public domain datasets:

• 2 Elevation data sets. SRTM data courtesy USGS. (Description on NASA website.) GTopo30 Digital Elevation Model data courtesy USGS.
• 12 Monthly color vegetation/snow datasets (visible spectrum). Blue Marble Next Generation data courtesy NASA.
• 9 Vector datasets for Water Features. Rivers, lakes, islands, shorelines courtesy Natural Earth Data. Rasterized with Mapnik and Python.
• Bathymetry data courtesy NASA.

[1] I wrote over 9,000 lines of code in C#, and ran all the tile creation jobs (days! weeks! months!) on Mono on my late 2006 MacBook Pro.
